Event Description

Westminster College Aquatic Science Summer Camp

Students and faculty guides will collect data on various parameters across four creek systems, visiting one creek per day. The data collected will support the Missouri Department of Conservation, with sites selected based on their data needs.

High school students may have the opportunity to present findings at the Missouri Academy of Science in April of the following year if the data are broadly applicable, and the data collected may be published by the faculty leaders in the future.

Research Activity Overview

Students will conduct citizen science projects at each of the three locations collecting Streat Team Data including:

  1. Visual survey for flood plain use, riparian cover, streambank conditions, bed composition, embeddedness, algae 
  2. Macroinvertebrate sampling, collection, identification, and sensitivity assessment
  3. Stream Discharge and flow rate of water
  4. Chemical analyses of dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, transparency, temperature, nitrate/nitrogen
  5.  Lab analysis of passive sampling for detection of species presence and general surveys of amphibians, fish, and other invertebrates

Personal Rx; sunglasses; bug spray; sunscreen; hat; water shoes or boots; towels; sheets, blankets, pillows, or sleeping bag to use on dormitory bed. Additional info on what to bring will be provided after registration.
