Week 1 Summer Academy Classes | June 3 - 6

IMPORTANT NOTE: Summer Academy is a FREE oppportunity for Boys & Girls, Grades K-8th to participate in their choice of classes during 3 weeks in June. Children can participate in one or in as many classes as they would like. Classes sizes are limited and we will not extend beyond these limits. A waiting list will be created once a class is filled. Registrations are not completed until they are in the computer software. For this reason, we highly encourage you to register ONLINE to secure your child(s) spot in our classes.

Class content will not change from week to week, therefore, we ask that you do NOT sign your child up for the same class week to week. Select classes do have a supply requirement that will be listed within the class description that we ask you respect. To make sure class content is age appropriate, age groups will not be negotiable. Children should be enrolled in the grade they are going into in the Fall of 2019. ‘R’ Recreation staff will be available in between classes to assist children if needed, but it is expected that children will be able to walk to and from each class on their own.

Intro to Acting
Instructor: Cameron Fehring

Let your inner star shine! If you are interested in acting then this fun, high-energy class is for you. Students will begin to explore the art of acting for the stage by completing exercises, warm-ups, games and working together to create scenes. Limit 12

I Love Me
Instructor: Lindy Nielsen

Time: 9:00am-10:00am

Grades: K - 2nd

This self-exploratory course is dedicated to helping you get to know yourself a little better. Personality tests, customized affirmations, exploring the power of positivity, creating gratitude jars heart mapping and other activities are designed to increase self-confidence and help you identify your amazing strengths, all while having a total blast. Limit 12

Messy Science
Instructor: Sharon Whitaker

Time: 9:00am-10:00am
Location: CWC Main Hall 181
Grades: K - 2nd

Let’s explore all the different things you can do with milk, bubbles, fizzing sidewalk chalk and slime. Students will explore, create, and think outside the box as they work with a variety of elements. Some of the projects will be messy, so dress accordingly. Limit 10

Fashion 101
Instructor: Brandi Maxson

Time: 9:00am-10:00am

Grades: 1st - 3rd

You are never too young to start learning how to design simple clothing. Our instructor will use a variety of different ways to teach your first, second or third grader about fashion. Students will get to make their own clothing for a small mannequin and participate in a few fun design challenges throughout the week. Limit 12

No Tech Games to Go
Instructor: Connie Murray

Grades: 1st - 3rd

Students will make re-usable board games to take home. These No-Tech games can be played anytime even with no electricity or devices! Participants will learn to play games that kids everywhere use to play and games that you can share with older generations. Let’s see if you have the winning strategies of a good ol’ game of Tic-Tac-Toe or Checkers!

Riverton Rocks!

Grades: 3rd - 5th grade

Riverton Rocks is a “simple act of kindness” project. Have a fun week designing, painting and labeling rocks to be shared and placed throughout the community or to be given to family and friends to brighten their day. Students need to wear their “paint” clothes. Limit 12

Five B's of Summer: Botany, Bugs, Buttons, Beads & Blings

Let’s add a little BLING to your porch & patio! This botany inspired class will have you creating your own flower pots, flower planting included. We will then craft darling bugs using buttons, beads & sticks to add some extra BLING your beautiful potted flowers. Your creations are sure to brighten your summer or would make a lovely summer gift for someone special! Limit 12

Theatre Production (Week 1 of 3)

You were meant to be a star! If you have experience in acting and desire to be part of a production then this class is for you. Students will begin to explore acting for the stage by completing exercises, warm-ups, games and working together to create scenes. The three week commitment is required as the students will be participating in a role for a full production on the last day of week 3. Limit 15

Exploring with Colors
Instructor: Sharon Whitaker

Who doesn’t love a bit of color in their day? A color circle, based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of art. Participants will study primary, secondary, tertiary and complimentary colors and will be conducting a variety of cool experiments that will explore the color wheel. Limit 15

Let's Get Creative
Instructor: Brandi Maxson

Grades: 1st - 3rd

The participants will be exploring print making, collages and abstract art in this Summer Academy class. Students will use several different art mediums with each project. Dress appropriately as this will be messy and some of the materials used may not come out of their clothing. Limit 12

For the Birds

Our feathered friends always welcome a cool spot to hang out. Students will put together an amazing retreat for the birds to use when they visit your home. Start with a welcoming guest room and some fresh food then wait to see if they won’t stay around so that you can keep an eye on them and enjoy their presence. Limit 15

Friendship Bracelets

Do you and your friends both need some new arm bling? Then sign up for this class where we will spend four days crafting friendship bracelets galore. You can keep them, trade them, or gift them to someone special. Limit 12

Sport Cup Stacking

Are you ready to try your hand at sport stacking and have lots of fun doing it? This is an exceptional activity to developed hand-eye coordination, focus, concentration and ambidexterity. It’s a sport that everyone can learn and, with practice, improve your times as you challenge yourself! Students will learn the 3-3-3 stack, the 3-6-3 stack, the cycle stack and the rapid fire. Endurance 2019, Part I

Do you have the ENDURANCE to survive and thrive? This class will have you challenging yourself and teammates physically and mentally to win pyramid pieces that represent 13 essential inner qualities: Strength, Heart, Courage, Perseverance, Luck, Trust, Leadership, Discipline, Knowledge, Commitment, Teamwork, Ingenuity, and Friendship. Teams will also compete in the “Temple of Fate”, where you will go head to head in a strategic mind-bending game of Wood-Water-Fire! The team that collects all 13 pieces become the ENDURANCE champions for the R-Rec Summer Academy week one. Limit 12

Screenwriting 101

Have you ever watched a movie and wondered, “who thought this whole thing up?” Well, these people are called screenwriters, and they get to create the whole story and characters in the movies. This is your chance to learn screenwriting styles and write your own short screenplay. Limit 10

Theatre Movement

DIY Spa Kits

All Things No Bake

Snacks, snacks, delicious snacks! These are easy, enjoyable treats that the students will learn to create that can be shared any time of the year. The participants will learn measuring, pouring, and basic kitchen skills and they won’t leave the class hungry. Limit 12

Edible Science

Learning about science just got more fun, and tastier! The only thing better than just learning science is to do it through food experiments! Participants in this new class will make solar oven s’mores, gumdrop bridges and be shaking for butter! Limit 10

The Creativity Challenge

Does your little one love to wear their thinking cap? Play make-believe? Think outside the box? Sign them up for the creativity challenge where each day is sure to stretch their imaginations and exercise their brains. By using fine motor skills, movement and critical thinking, your child will be able to embrace their creativity and have full reign over their imagination. Spoiler Alert: one of the days will include an Escape Room! Limit 12

Outside Art

Combining holidays and parties equal twice the fun! Head over to this class for themes that will be the hit of the holiday party. Each day will highlight a different holiday and we will celebrate by creating fun and unique snacks, crafts, and decorations that will help you become the holiday “party planner go-to” for your family and friends! Lights, Camera, Action: Make Your Own Movie

If you have been wondering how the looks of a movie and theater sets are created then this class is just what you need. Stained glass is a beautiful but time consuming art form. In this class students will simplify it by faking it! Participants will turn some everyday objects into multicolored designs that everyone will admire and enjoy, and they will do it in just days! Limit 15

Bee My Honey

Although bees are an important part of food production, they are most well known for producing honey and wax. This honey and wax can be used to make some very nice beauty products that can make a girl’s life more elegant. In this class we will create some fun little ‘extras’ using honey. Limit 15
