TRYOUT Details

WHO: Admitted and enrolled UC San Diego Students 

Sunday, October 13th 2019

10:00am-4:00pm (Check in at 9:30am)

Location: RIMAC Auxiliary Gym

ELIGIBILITY

  • Admitted to UC San Diego for Fall 2019 or enrolled full-time student at UC San Diego.
  • Enrolled UC San Diego students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • All candidates must register for tryouts and submit the required documentation.
  • For further information on team requirements please see our Program Expectations.

SKILLS

STUNTING: We would like to see both coed and all-girl style stunting. Tryouts will be an open workshop style where you find partners and work on your tryout stunt.

TUMBLING: Standing back handspring for all candidates is highly recommended, but not required. Please demonstrate any tumbling you have during tryouts.

JUMPS: We will ask to see your toe touch and one additional jump of your choice.

GAMEDAY: Female candidates will perform the (1) Triton Fight Song, (2) sideline chant, and (3) tryout dance. Material should be executed in a collegiate manner, with maximum effort, and suitable for college level and style. Excessive facials are not encouraged.

INTERVIEW: Each candidate will be interviewed by a panel of judges. Candidates should be honest and thorough when answering questions. The interview is meant to assess a candidate's character, professionalism and communication skills.

*Male candidates will perform the following skills: stunt, tumbling, and chant (motions optional). Jumps are optional.

TRYOUT ATTIRE
We encourage all applicants to display an appropriate collegiate cheerleader image and show up to tryouts ‘performance ready’.

  • Black sports tank top (Female Candidates) 
  • Black T-Shirt (Male Candidates)
  • Black athletic shorts 
  • Athletic or cheer shoes
  • Hair pulled back out of face
  • Gameday Make-up (Female Candidates)
  • Jewelry off
  • Tattoos covered

PREPARING FOR TRYOUTS

Candidates will learn all material prior to tryouts. A link to instructional videos will be emailed upon registration.
Attending prep clinics is highly encouraged to allow candidates to review all material and stunt with veteran cheerleaders and other candidates.

VIDEO Candidate Checklist 
The following skills are required for a video tryout submission and filmed on a hard cheer mat (no spring floor). Video submissions are now closed for the 2019-2020 academic year

1. Name, grade (2019/2020)

2. Jumps- Toe touch, one additional jump of your choosing  
3. Sideline Dance- FEMALE CANDIDATES ONLY
4. Sideline Chant - MALE CANDIDATES- Motions Optional
5. UCSD fight song- FEMALE CANDIDATES ONLY
6. Standing Tumbling (if applicable)
7. Running Tumbling (if applicable)
8. Stunting- All stunting positions are accepted, Co-ed as well as All-Girl stunting. It should be clearly indicated who the candidate is within the video. You may include more than one stunt

9. Provide responses to interview questions.

UC San Diego Cheer Tryout Program Expectations


REQUIREMENTS

  • Full-time enrollment at UC San Diego.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Adhere to Athletics Department & Team Code of Conduct.
  • Attend all practices and assigned athletic games.
  • Participate in fundraising, community service, and promotional events.
  • Team Members must maintain their own health insurance that covers injuries related to participation in cheerleading at all times.

FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS

The team fundraises as much as possible to sustain the perks of our program. New member dues are $400. UC San Diego provides cheer uniforms, warm ups, and other related expenses at no cost to you. In addition, complimentary attendance at UCA College Cheer Camp is provided to all veteran team members. Please do not let cost discourage you from trying out. We will work with you on a payment plan if necessary. 

 

Commitment

SUMMER

  • Santa Barbara UCA Camp Aug 8-11
  • Workout plan, on your own time, at least 2x a week
  • Learn all game material via video

FALL

  • Practice 3x a week
  • *Volleyball, Soccer, and Water Polo games
