Winter Skills Camp

February 22nd

Grades: 3rd-7th
Session 1: 9:00AM - 10:25AM
Session 2 Offense: 10:15AM - 11:00AM
Session 2 Defense: 11:00AM - 12:00PM
Cost:  Session 1 Pitchers & Catcher $40
Cost: Session 2 Offense & Defense $50
Both sessions for $80
Location: Lund Center-Gym on the Blue Forum

From 169, Take College Ave, take right at the college sign, park in the nearest lot to Lund. Doors will be open up top by the stairs as well as by the ice arena. 

Prices include a Gustavus Softball T-Shirt

This year, as a team, we are collecting non-perishable food items to donate to a local food shelf! Please bring a food item with to camp if you are able. The Gustavus Softball players & coaches can't wait to meet everyone!

Session 1: Pitching
9:00am-10:25am- A beginner session, focused on developing a more consistent pitcher
Drills, Drills, Drills

  • Learn new drills to help develop pitching fundamentals and continue to work on staying on the powerline
  • Create more drive in your pitch and increase power in the motion
  • Learn how to throw inside and outside corners
  • Continue to develop change up consistency and location

Session 1: Catching Session
9:00am-10:25am-A beginner session, focused on developing a more successful catcher
Fundamentals-Receiving, Transfer, Throw Downs, Blocking

  • Catcher will learn the proper fundamentals of receiving the ball
  • How to transfer the ball from their glove to their throwing hand
  • The importance of quick and powerful throws
  • Framing the ball to help your pitcher succeed
  • Blocking the ball, quickness behind the plate

Session 2: Offense 10:15-11:00am

  • Proper running form
  • Gustie warm ups emphasizing quickness
  • How to run the bases most efficiently
  • The benefits of smart baserunners


  • Work on balance starting from the ground up
  • Help develop proper hand path
  • Increase body awareness
  • Teach athletes the importance of timing
  • Develop more leg drive
  • Practice keeping top half in


  • Teach bunting fundamentals
  • Work on the different types of bunts and the different situations
  • Help athletes understand the importance of the short game and the WHY
  • Help athletes learn the basics of slapping

Session 2: Defense 11:00-12:00
Throwing Form

  • Proper grip
  • Receiving the ball-footwork, glove placement
  • Transfer into hand-quick and efficient
  • The importance of playing catch

Infield Play

  • Gustie Infield Fundies
  • Moving through the ball
  • Different glove movements
  • Proper fielding position
  • Situational Play

Outfield Play

  • Footwork-drop steps, moving back, coming through the ball
  • Glovework-where to catch the ball
  • Transfer-how fast can you get it out of the glove into the throw
  • Whole body throws
  • Hitting the cut
  • Ground ball/Fly ball OF play
