2020 Bard College Swim Camp
About the Camp
The Bard College Swim Camp is for age group swimmers between 8-18. The camp is designed for these athletes to further develop and refine their skills in the pool. The swimmer should already have a fundamental base on all four competitive strokes.
The camp will run for five full days. Each morning the swimmers will arrive at the Stevenson Athletic Center. From here they will experience a day filled with in-pool stroke clinics, classroom talks and out of the pool dry land exercising. All campers will receive lunch each day at Kline Commons Dining Hall, snacks, refreshments and a camp t-shirt. All necessary equipment such as kickboards, fins and paddles will be supplied.
John Weitz joined the coaching staff at Bard in July 2017 as Head Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach. His collegiate coaching experience began at Seton Hall University, where he was an assistant from 1992-95. He was an assistant coach at national powerhouse Johns Hopkins from 2001-2008, where he coached present day Johns Hopkins coach, Scott Armstrong to a D3 National record in the Mile. Those were some of the Blue Jays most successful seasons and included two 2nd place and two 3rd place finishes at the NCAA Championships. From Johns Hopkins, Weitz took over as head coach at Wabash College. He was there from 2008-2010, leading them to their best finish (3rd) in the NCAC, a national powerhouse conference that includes Kenyon and Denison. At the youth level, Weitz was a three-time National YMCA Coach of the Year nominee while running the program at the Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge, N.J. While there, he coached swimmers to four individual and two relay national championships. He was the head coach for three years as the prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore, Md. Before arriving at Bard, Weitz served five years as the head senior coach with the New Canaan, CT YMCA Caimans. In his other role as Aquatics Director, Weitz manages all programs associated with the Stevenson Athletic Center natatorium, outside of the varsity programs.
Jenna Tocco is the Assistant Swim Coach at Bard College where she just completed her fourth season with the team. She grew up in the region and was a competitive swimmer from the ages of 7-18 when she then left for Division I Stony Brook University. While at Stony Brook she received her B.A. in Environmental Design, Policy and Planning. She is also a swim coach for the summer recreation swim team in her home town of Kerhonkson, NY.
Counselors will include current Bard College swim team members and other local college swimmers.
The Stevenson Athletic Center Natatorium is a 6 lane, 25 yard pool. It is equipped with balcony seating. Adults/non-campers will not be allowed on deck during camp.
