Event Description

June Residential Camps

Coach Hyndman and his dedicated staff of coaches have designed a top-quality program for boys who have a strong desire to improve upon their understanding of the game and abilities as soccer players. The GCU campus and facilities provide a one of a kind environment where players will participate in a challenging but fun week of soccer education. Players will typically be placed into smaller groups based on age and skill level to ensure campers receive the most individual attention possible. Morning sessions will usually consist of players working on a specific topic within one of the phases of the game. The afternoon sessions emphasizes tighter space, contextual learning, and tactical development using small-sided activities on indoor futsal courts. The evenings consist of nightly tournaments with full-sided games where the players are able to demonstrate the contextual learning and tactical understanding worked on during the day. At the GCU summer residential camps, we strive to teach the campers not just the game intelligence and technical execution, but rather the contextual application and how it all comes together within a game environment.

  • Residential Option: All sessions plus lodging, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Commuter Option: All sessions plus lunch and dinner.

Elite Junior Lopes Camp: Our Elite Junior Lopes camps are designed for youth players interested in further developing their soccer ability and passion for the game through a dynamic, engaging, and fun environment. Activities are designed to facilitate contextual learning through game like situations. Individual players will engage in situational repetitions improving game intelligence and technical execution. Our goal is to create a memorable and playful experience for each camper, assuring they depart from our camp with higher game IQ, technical proficiency, and most importantly love and passion for the beautiful game.

Goalkeeper Program: The GCU goalkeeping program provides young goalkeepers of all levels a challenging program that will drive them to excel. Designed and coached by the GCU goalkeeping coaches. The morning sessions will consist of detailed training in modern goalkeeping techniques. Such topics include catching, diving, breakaways, crosses and footwork. The afternoon sessions will focus on the fundamental tactics of goalkeeping such as positioning, distribution and communication. In the evening, the goalkeepers will join the field players right away to compete in tournament games.

Futsal: Futsal is small sided soccer game played throughout Brazil and all across the world to help develop technique, creativity and quick decision making. It is played on a gym floor with a heavier ball that encourages dribbling and quick short passing. Stars all over the world began their careers on futsal courts and we are proud to make it part of our residential camp program. In the afternoon of our residential camps we will go inside, away from the warm afternoon Phoenix sun and play futsal with all of the campers. It will be a wonderful chance for the players to really be challenged with this fun and tight space game.

Meals & Lodging:  All meals and lodging is on the campus of GCU! All rooms are newly renovated and have air conditioning. Located near the GCU Athletics soccer fields and gyms, the rooms are very comfortable and will be an extremely safe and efficient venue. In addition to the coaching staff staying in the dorms, we hire staff to help monitor and supervise the rooms. Meals will be provided as usual in an all-you-can-eat format to ensure that every player's needs are met.

What To Bring:  Other than the normal amount of street clothes we suggest that you bring the following  items: 1 pair of soccer shoes, 1 pair of indoor shoes (you can bring turf shoes but it is optional, one of three fields is Turf), 1 pair of tennis shoes, 6 t-shirts, 6 pairs of shorts, 8 pairs of socks, shin guards, other soccer type clothes, 1 swim suit, small bag or shoe bag, sandals, water container, toiletries including sun block, twin bed linens, a pillow and bath towels. Don't forget to bring your soccer ball if you do not plan on purchasing one from the camp store.

Parent Info: Parents are welcome to stay and watch sessions.  Parents are welcome to visit campers during down times in the lobby of the residence halls, with the exception of move-in and move-out. However, we prefer for staff and campers to be the only people on the floors of the residence halls. This ensures the safety of the campers.

Medical Care: Each camp will have a full-time athletic trainer from the GCU Sports Medicine staff on duty to take care of all minor injuries. For more serious problems, several local hospitals are just minutes away.

Airport Transportation: Every major airline has flights into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport including Southwest, American, US Air, Delta, United and Spirit. The airport is a short 15 minutes from campus. Campers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the airport as we do not provide shuttle service. Use Uber/Lyft services and ask to be dropped off at Halo Parking Garage entrance at 5231 N 35th Ave Phoenix, AZ 85017

Spending Money & Camp Store: The Camp fee includes all the meals that the players will eat during the week. However, many players like to purchase pizza or sports drinks as a snack after the evening session.

Also available in the Camp store is some of the latest soccer gear, so please make sure that campers are provided for appropriately.

College Soccer Presentation: Many of our older campers have aspirations to play soccer at the collegiate level. At the GCU summer residential camps, we try to assist these players as much as possible by giving them insight into the recruiting process. This presentation is highly informative to the prospective student-athlete and is open to all parents. The presentation will conclude with an open question and answer segment.
