The UTSA String Project is a member of The National String Project Consortium, which was created in 1998 by the American String Teachers Association to help alleviate the string teacher shortage and to promote string education in public schools.

The UTSA String project provides university music education majors the opportunity to develop skills needed to become successful artist teachers. Of course, a primary benefit of the String Project is to offer beginning through advanced level music instruction to community students at both the Main and Downtown UTSA campuses on string instruments and classical guitar.

Because of the extraordinarily low tuition cost (about 4 dollars per class), the String Project does not usually offer scholarships. If you wish to apply for some financial assistance, please contact us. However, your child’s registration will not be processed until the week of September 1. Families will be notified by email if assistance is possible.

Thank you.

*Lessons will be scheduled on Mondays or Tuesdays depending on teacher and student availability. The more times you are available, the better we will be able to accommodate all students.*

In order to adhere to social distancing guidelines, we will offer two weekly experiences: (a) 30 minute private lessons, and (b) an hour weekly seminar with small groups of students (8 or fewer students) and one teacher. We will teach these lessons and seminars virtually.

Engaging in private lessons, each teacher can work with students on their self-described musical goals as well as some goals the teacher identifies for each student. In addition, your students can choose to work towards participating in the American String Teachers Association ASTACAP experience, when a student plays for a clinician for comments and an evaluation. The seminar experience will let students have interactions with other students, hear and encourage each other in their musical journeys, and learn together. Seminars will vary activities from letting students play for each other to working on general techniques together.

Due to the ongoing situation regarding COVID-19, we will be offering virtual instruction for intermediate and advanced students. Since beginner lessons depend heavily on in-person interactions, we will be unable to offer beginner lessons until further notice. If you are interested in beginner lessons, you may complete the following form and will be notified in the event that UTSA policy allows a safe and accessible way to provide in-person beginner lessons: https://forms.gle/qX4q9RpwvwhjyZ1UA

We want the best for our String Project Families and we hope implementing these changes will keep us all safe while helping students continue their learning.
