Event Description

Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE)

The Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE) Camp at the University of Alabama’s Styslinger College of Engineering is an immersive, multi-day experience designed to introduce high school students to the dynamic world of engineering and computing. Through hands-on learning, industry engagement, and collaborative design challenges, students will explore the many ways engineers solve real-world problems and improve lives.

Throughout the week, participants will engage in interactive departmental activities led by faculty and staff across multiple engineering disciplines. These experiences allow students to explore fields such as mechanical, civil, electrical, computer science, and other engineering areas while working directly in university laboratories and learning spaces.

Students will also participate in industry-focused Lunch & Learn sessions, where leaders from engineering and technology companies share insights into their careers, emerging innovations, and the future of the profession. These conversations provide students with valuable exposure to the real-world applications of engineering and the diverse career paths available to them.

A key component of the program is the Design Team Experience. Students will be placed into collaborative teams where they will work together throughout the week to develop solutions to an engineering design challenge. Guided by mentors and counselors, teams will brainstorm, prototype ideas, refine their concepts, and prepare a final presentation.

At the conclusion of the program, each team will present their design solution to peers, faculty, and program leaders, showcasing their creativity, teamwork, and engineering thinking developed during the week.

In addition to academic programming, students will participate in campus tours, recreational activities, and community-building experiences that allow them to experience life as a University of Alabama engineering student. These activities are designed to create a supportive and engaging environment while helping students build friendships with peers who share an interest in STEM.

The SITE program reflects the Styslinger College of Engineering’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders in engineering. Our goal is for each participant to leave with a deeper understanding of engineering disciplines, greater confidence in their abilities, and excitement about the possibilities that engineering education can offer.
