Event Description

Join elite breaststrokers AJ Pouch and Carles Coll Marti* for a two-day breaststroke camp.

Swimmers will spend three hours each day learning the technical details and racing skills required to become faster and more efficient in breaststroke. AJ and Carles will share the techniques, drills, and competitive mindset that have helped them succeed at the highest levels of the sport.

To provide age-appropriate instruction, the camp will feature separate sessions for swimmers 12 and under and swimmers 13 and older.

Day 1: Building Speed Through the Bodyline, Kick, and Pullout

Bodyline

A strong bodyline—and an understanding of your center of gravity—is the foundation for carrying speed in breaststroke. Swimmers will learn how to stay aligned in the water, reduce resistance, and better understand how their body moves through each phase of the stroke.

Kick

Breaststroke kick is highly individual and depends on each swimmer’s anatomy, mobility, and flexibility through the knees, hips, and ankles. Swimmers will explore which type of kick best fits their body and learn how to generate more power while maintaining an efficient recovery.

Pullouts

The pullout is the fastest part of a breaststroke race and creates an opportunity to gain an advantage before the first stroke. A great pullout requires a strong bodyline, explosive power through the pulldown and dolphin kick, and an efficient breaststroke kick and recovery. Swimmers will learn how to connect each part of the pullout while maintaining speed into the breakout.

Day 2: Connecting the Stroke and Racing with Confidence

Pull

Swimmers will explore two primary breaststroke pull techniques: a wider sweeping motion and a smaller pressing motion that shares similarities with butterfly. They will learn the purpose of each technique and determine which approach best fits their body, kick, and natural stroke rhythm.

Timing

A strong kick and pull only become effective when they are connected through proper timing. Some breaststrokers benefit from a longer glide, while others are more successful swimming at a higher tempo. The best breaststrokers find the rhythm that allows them to maintain speed efficiently. Swimmers will learn how to connect their pull, breath, kick, and recovery to create a stroke that works for them.

Wall Approach

The approach into the wall is one of the most important parts of any race, and breaststroke leaves the smallest margin for error. Swimmers will learn how to judge distance, adjust their stroke, and time their finish to be able to jump to the wall during both breaststroke and individual medley races.
