Week 1 Summer Academy Classes | June 4 - 7

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: Summer Academy is a FREE oppportunity for Boys & Girls, Grades K-8th to participate in their choice of classes during 3 weeks in June. Children can participate in one or in as many classes as they would like. Classes sizes are limited and we will not extend beyond these limits. A waiting list will be created once a class is filled. Registrations are not completed until they are in the computer software. For this reason, we highly encourage you to register ONLINE to secure your child(s) spot in our classes.

Class content will not change from week to week, therefore, we ask that you do NOT sign your child up for the same class week to week. Select classes do have a supply requirement that will be listed within the class description that we ask you respect. To make sure class content is age appropriate, age groups will not be negotiable. ‘R’ Recreation staff will be available in between classes to assist children if needed, but it is expected that children will be able to walk to and from each class on their own.
 
Let's Get Booky With it

We will be reading some super fun books and each day’s activities will be based off a new book. Age appropriate activities, including art and science projects, will be done each day. Please wear clothes that are okay to get dirty, as we could potentially get messy with some of the projects! Limit 12
No Tech Games to Go

Ages: 1st - 3rd grade
Students will make reusable board games to take home. These No-Tech games can be played anytime even with no electricity or devices. Participants will learn to play games that kids everywhere used to play and games that you can share with older generations. Let’s see if you have the winning strategies of a good ol’ game of Tic-Tac-Toe! Limit 12
Sporty Shorty

Ages: 1st - 3rd grade
Get your game on! Students will be participating in traditional sports and games throughout the week. There will be simple technique and instruction for basketball, volleyball, tennis, track relays, kickball, and other popular sport games. Your little Sporty will participate in fun skill building activities. Limit 14
Soccer

Ages: 3rd - 5th grade
If you love playing the awesome game of Futbol then you will want to be on the pitch at 9am! This session will be led by a college soccer player who will bring new tricks and strategies to the game. The fundamentals of soccer; ball handling, passing and striking will be practiced each day with fun drills and small sided games. Limit 14
T-Shirt Totes

Do you have t-shirts that you or your parent received at an event or as a gift that you do not wear? Let’s turn it into your new favorite reusable tote bag. Participants will need to provide 2-3 of their own t-shirts for this class. Limit 12
Hanging Flower Baskets

Ages: 3rd - 8th grade
During this class students will create their very own hanging flower baskets that are sure to brighten up any patio or could make a lovely summer gift for that someone special. No green thumb is required to participate, just your creative ideas.  Limit 12
C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation
Instructor: Jeff Hosking
Time: 9:00am-10:00am
Location: CWC Rural Justice Training Center
Ages: 5th - 8th grade
This class will explore how science and math are still important to solving crimes in our modern technological times. This class will discuss how technology is used to solve crimes, including DNA, finger prints, hair and fibers. A simulated surveillance will be conducted as the student learns to use critical thinking, inductive and deductive logic. Limit 15
Although this is a standalone course, it is recommended that students enroll in the Courtroom and Corrections course at 11am for the opportunity to obtain a complete view of the entire criminal justice system.

Start your morning off with a tasty breakfast that you have prepared yourself! Learn about nutrition as we whip up the meal to jumpstart your day. Using only toaster ovens and microwaves, we will prepare a delicious morning meal that you can make yourself at home when the school year begins. Limit 10
 
Let's Get Creative

Ages: Kindergarten
The littles will be exploring print making, collages and abstract art in this new Summer Academy class. Students will use several different art mediums with each project. Dress appropriately as this will be messy and some of the materials used may not come out of their clothing. Limit 12
For the Birds

Ages: 1st - 3rd grade
Our feathered friends always welcome a cool spot to hang out. Students will put together an amazing retreat for the birds to use when they visit your home. Start with a welcoming guest room and some fresh food then wait to see if they won’t stay around so that you can keep an eye on them and enjoy their presence. Limit 12
Soccer

Riverton Rocks!

Riverton Rocks is a “simple act of kindness” project. Have a fun week designing, painting and labeling rocks to be shared throughout the community or to be given to family and friends to brighten their day. Students need to wear their “paint” clothes. Limit 12
Endurance 2018, Part I

Ages: 3rd - 8th grade
Endurance to survive and thrive! This class will have you challenging yourself and teammates physically and mentally to win pyramid pieces that represent 13 essential inner qualities: strength, heart, courage, perseverance, luck, trust, leadership, discipline, knowledge, commitment, teamwork, ingenuity and friendship. The team that collects all 13 pieces become the Endurance champions! Teams will also compete in the “Temple of Fate”, where you will go head-to-head in a strategic mind-bending game of “Wood-Water-Fire”. Limit 12

Fashion 101

Ages: 1st - 3rd grade
You are never too young to start learning how to design simple clothing. Our instructor will use a variety of different ways to teach your first, second or third grader about fashion. Students will get to make their own clothing for a small mannequin and participate in a few fun design challenges throughout the week. Limit 12
Outside Art

There are lots of ways we can use a few readily available items to help spruce up the out-of-doors area around the house and the garden. Participants will spend time customizing outdoor decorations to make some unique “artwork” to beautify your favorite outdoor space. Limit 15
Volleyball

Ages: 3rd - 6th grade
Participants will be learning from one of our best collegiate women volleyball players. Kiley will instruct on the technique of passing, setting, hitting and serving with a focus on the fundamentals of the game. This program will consist of fun drills and games that will help develop your young volleyballer’s skills. Limit 14
Backyard Campouts

So you can’t get to the mountains or lake to go camping? Not a problem! Some of the best campouts can be held in your own backyard! This class will have you making the best backyard campout accessories and playing some cool campout games…all things you will be able to use and do again all summer long! Limit 12
Radio Broadcasting

Have you ever wanted to be a radio D.J? Here’s your chance to learn the trade in this introductory radio course designed to get students familiar with basic radio editing techniques and on-air presentation. Students will learn to use production equipment, voice editing, edit a commercial and make a radio liner. Their finished products will be aired on Rustler Radio 88.1! Limit 8
Under the Sea

If sea creatures are your jam, then this is the class you want to swim on into! We will be making some cute and cuddly sea creatures to take home and live – on your bed! The cool thing is that items from this class may be suitable to enter in the Fremont County Fair at the end of July. Limit 12
Ultimate Sports

Get in on these fast paced games for the ultimate time! Participants will play ultimate football, ultimate frisbee, ultimate field hockey, and maybe some kickball, nerf archery and other fun games…you will just have to sign up to see what ultimate fun looks like! Limit 14
Courtroom and Corrections
Instructor: Jeff Hosking
Time: 11:00am-12:00pm
Location: CWC Rural Justice Training Center
Ages: 5th - 8th grade
*Although this is a standalone course, it is highly suggested that the student enroll in one of the C.S.I courses at 9am or 10am.* This class will build on the C.S.I class. Evidence obtained and developed in the investigations class will be used for purposes of trail and possible sentencing. Students will be taken through the initial appearance, preliminary hearing and arraignment aspects as they relate to a criminal defendant. The level of proof concepts concerning “beyond a reasonable doubt” and importance of the evidence will be discussed. Students will also consider circumstances as they relate to sentencing and imprisonment. Limit 15

Famous Artists

Faux Stained Glass

Stained glass is a beautiful but time consuming art form. In this class students will simplify it by faking it! Participants will turn some everyday objects into multicolored designs that everyone will admire and enjoy, and they will do it in just days! Limit 12

Braiding Basics

Beginning Guitar

Ages: 5th - 8th grade
Learn to play some chords and simple songs in just four days! We will have a mini concert at the conclusion of the week where your family members will be impressed by your progress. Students must have their own guitars, in good working condition, to take this class. Please check with the instructor if you are unsure of your instrument’s suitability. Limit 12
