The UTSA Percussion Camp offers a week-long “total percussion” experience for both middle and high school students graduating 6th - 12th grade in a day camp format. Our goal is to immerse students in the exciting world of percussion, helping them develop their technique and musicality, improve their sightreading abilities, and learn about new styles of music and instruments through interactive masterclasses and ensemble experiences.

Each day, students will attend hands-on masterclasses with UTSA percussion faculty on the following topics:
  •  Snare drum and marching percussion fundamentals
  •  Timpani and ear training
  •  Keyboard percussion techniques
  •  Jazz percussion and drum set
  •  World percussion (Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Trinidadian music)

Students will directly apply these skills in a wide variety of ensembles, including small chamber groups, large percussion ensembles, as well as jazz and world percussion ensembles. Each of these groups will perform on the final concert on Friday, July 12 at 4pm. Students should have at least one year of experience studying music to participate in the UTSA Percussion Camp (band, private lessons, or similar).

Classes and rehearsals run from 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday. Please see our 2019 general schedule below to give you a clearer idea of how our camp is structured.

We are excited to announce that Ivan Trevino (ivandrums.com) will be joining us for two days as a special guest artist this year. He will be presenting masterclasses for all camp participants, and will give a solo/chamber recital on Wednesday, July 10th at 4pm in the UTSA Recital Hall
