CAMP DETAILS

The UTSA Summer Band Institute offers a comprehensive music experience focused on developing the musician in addition to developing playing techniques. At this one-week playing intensive camp, campers will perform with one of our concert bands and attend daily classes that include rehearsals, sectional and master classes, and an elective class, which focuses on performing soundtrack music and developing stronger marching techniques for our high school students. This camp provides an opportunity for students to receive exceptional instruction on the instrument that they love and to broaden their learnings of many musical components.

Each day is divided into structured routines that focus on developing individual musicianship and includes an hour break for lunch. On check-in day, each student will complete a placement audition, which will place them into one of our concert bands. Campers put down their instruments at 6:00pm, but the day isn’t over yet! Each evening students can participate in recreational activities such as, swimming, sand volleyball, camp Olympics, movie night, various recreational sports, rock-wall climbing, tennis, basketball, a Fiesta Texas outing and a formal banquet to cap off the week!

Performance opportunities are also an integral part of the camp experience. Students at the UTSA Summer Band Institute will perform in a public performance at the conclusion of the week. These performances may include master class performances, marching exhibitions and or the final concert on Saturday.

Eligible campers must have attended grades 6-12 in the '19-’20 school year. Campers should have at least one year of school instruction or equivalent.

Grade Completed in Spring 2020:
  • 6th, 7th, 8th - Participate in Middle School curriculum
  • 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th - Participate in High School curriculum

EXPLORE CAMP LIFE

Music isn’t the only reason that you come to camp! It is also a chance to experience what living and learning in a collegiate setting is all about. We understand that for some of you, this will be the first time that you, your son or your daughter will be away from home for an extended period of time, so be sure to read our Parent & Camper Handbook. This handbook contains important information to help you prepare for camp. We also understand that the structure of our camp is not like many other camps here in Texas. We take great pride in the fact that we are able to offer our campers with a unique camper experience. Our mission for our camp will continually be to expose our campers to a wide variety of musical repertoire and performance opportunities.

During this camp, each camper (both middle school & high school)will take part in a "Simulated Film Scoring ensemble". This will allow the students to get an idea of what professional musicians in the film industry get to do. Throughout the week, campers will work to perform soundtrack music to a live film. This challenges the players to perform in an ensemble setting outside the normal genre they are typically exposed to in the public school setting. For our high school campers, we will have all students perform in an outdoor marching ensemble. We will teach a basic marching technique to help unify the group and provide a set of marching instruments to those who require specialty marching horns (i.e. sousaphones, mellophone, marching percussion, etc.). The campers will work together to create a full marching performance equipped with fun drill design, pop tunes and high-energy performance. All marching rehearsals will be lead by Ron Ellis, who currently serves as the Director of Bands at the University of Texas at San Antonio as well as the head director of the UTSA “Spirit of San Antonio”. During the rehearsal blocks we will also discuss current topics related to marching band techniques and help campers develop basic leadership skills that they can take back to their respective programs. The curriculum will be structured to represent that of many collegiate marching bands.

RECREATION

Our evening recreation activities are designed to let campers take a break from their instruments and spend some social time with new friends. Each evening there will be a free recreation activity; events such as movie nights, nights spent at the recreation center, ice cream socials, sports and more. On Wednesday, all students will participate in a Six Flags outing. For a better idea of how the day is laid out, please view our camp schedule below:
