McNeese Summer High School Band Academies

Sunday, June 17th - Thursday, June 21st, 2018

The McNeese Summer High School Band Academy provides an intense and exciting four days of education and preparation for high school marching band, concert band, or jazz band in the fall.  Three focus tracks are available including:

  • Instrumental Music
  • Drum Major
  • Color Guard

Our summer academy is staffed by clinicians from across the eastern United States, McNeese Faculty, area band directors and student leadership of the McNeese Bands. Evening activities include sports and recreation, swimming, and a movie night. Students may participate as commuters (day campers) or on-campus residents.  Dorm rooms and meals are available as part of the packages.

Academy Requirements:

  • Participants must have attended grades 8-11 in the ’17-’18 school year (will be in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 in the fall of 2018)
  • Graduating seniors, who are attending McNeese as music majors in the fall, may attend at the discounted rate of $225 as a resident camper, or attend as a commuter camper for $100.  
  • Color guard participants may range from beginners to advanced performers
  • Instrumental Musicianship participants must have at least two years of school instruction or equivalent private instruction on their primary instrument


Academy Tuition & Fees

Residents: $350 (includes tuition, housing, all daily meals, academy shirt & recreation)
Commuters: $225 (includes tuition, daily lunch, academy shirt & recreation)
Graduated high school seniors (class of 2018) who will be attending McNeese as music majors in the fall: $100 (commuter)  $225 (resident)

Promotions:

  • 2018 Texas All-Area Band/Orchestra Musicians subtract $100 (Resident Cost: $250 / Commuter Cost: $125)
  • 2017 LA All-State Band/Orchestra Students (Baton Rouge in November) subtract $250 (Resident cost: $100 / Commuter Cost: Free)
  • 2018 Texas All-State Band/Orchestra Musicians (San Antonio in February) subtract $250 (Resident cost: $100 / Commuter Cost: Free)
  • 10-19 students from the same school: $20 off full cost per student*
  • 20+ students from the same school: $25 off full cost per student*

Students will need the following for their respective academy focus track (please read the entire document!):
Everyone: Attire for the finale performances will be academy shirt (distributed during the week) & shorts or pants

Instrumental Music Academy

  • Your instrument (McNeese CANNOT provide any instruments, mouthpieces or reeds)
  • Standard mute(s)
  • Pencil
  • Swimsuit for Pool Night
  • Umbrella or rain jacket
  • PERCUSSIONISTS: Please bring as much of the following as you have, or can get from your director:
    Concert snare sticks and marching sticks
    Medium yarn mallets / Xylophone mallets / Timpani mallets
    **If you do not have access to all of these, that's ok. Bring as much as you can.

Drum Major Academy

  • Your concert band instrument (if you are a woodwind or brass player)(Percussionists refer to the above list)
  • A metronome if you have one
  • Comfortable athletic shoes
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Swimsuit for Pool Night
  • Umbrella or rain jacket

Color Guard Academy (MSU will not be able to provide any equipment) - More information about equipment, show
theme, etc. will be sent to you in early June.

All Resident (Overnight) Students
* Note: Residents must remain on campus at all times, unless arrangments are made prior to the academy week. Car keys
will be collected from students driving themselves. Any resident leaving campus during the week will be dismissed from
the academy without a refund.

  • Bed Linens
  • Pillow
  • Towel and Toiletries
  • Alarm clock of some kind

**Residents: If you will be taking any medication during the week, please bring only the amount you will need for the
week, in the perscription container. Place the perscription bottle in a ziplock bag, labeled with your name. An academy
staff member will hold and distribute medication on a daily basis.**

2:00 Finale Performance in Tritico Theatre (large glass entryway of fine arts building)
3:30 Check out at dorms
Family, directors and friends are invited to the Academy Finale Performances beginning at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday,

June 21. This will be held in the grand gallery and Tritico Theatre, next to the band hall.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Dorms, meals and sessions will be supervised at all times.
