Grand Valley State Baseball Camps

Winter Instructional Camp

This camp is designed for players who want to get better. Hitting and defense instruction will take place in the morning session for catchers. Pitching instruction and bullpens will also be a part of the morning session. This camp will have two parts, Session 1: Pitchers & Catchers, Session 2: Infielders & Outfielders.

Schedule
Registration will begin at 12:00 PM in the Kelly Family Sports Center next to the baseball field. Camp will begin at 1:00 PM.

Pitchers will have the opportunity to learn from the Grand Valley State University pitching coach, Shane Street. Coach Street has put together an impressive resume:

Shane Street enters his second year as an Assistant Coach for the Grand Valley State baseball team.  Street, who has many responsibilities during the off-season, will be the Pitching Coordinator for the Lakers this season.

Street brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Lakers following five years as a professional player in Independent Baseball, most recently with the River City Rascals of the Frontier League.  Street spent the last three years of his career as a pitcher in/with: United Baseball League (Rio Grande Valley White Wings) where he won a League Championship, Frontier League (Southern Illinois Miners and the Rascals) and the American Association (Sioux Falls Canaries).

Catchers will have the opportunity to learn from the Grand Valley State University catching coach, Jon Newman.

Jon Newman enters his first year as an Assistant Coach for the Grand Valley State University State baseball team. Newman will be in charge of running camps and tournaments in the off season, and will coach the catchers.

Newman played and caught at Spring Arbor University under Hall of Fame coach Sam Riggleman. He spent last year as the Volunteer Assistant Baseball coach at Central Michigan University.

What to bring
Tennis/Turf Shoes (No Cleats), baseball glove, hat, pants, bat, batting helmets and catching gear. Optional items to consider: batting gloves and any other desired piece of equipment.

Camp Site
The camp will be held at the Kelly Family Sports Center on GVSU's Allendale Campus.

The GVSU Baseball Program
The GVSU baseball program has established itself as one of the premiere programs in NCAA Division II. The Lakers were the 2016 Co-Conference Champions and also won their third consecutive GLIAC Conference Tournament Championship. The 2013 team finished 3rd at the Division II World Series in addition to winning the GLIAC championship. The 2012 Lakers won the GLIAC regular season and tournament and was a NCAA Regional semifinalist. In 2011, Grand Valley was the GLIAC champion and advanced to the Division II World Series. With a 52-5 record the Lakers spent most of the season ranked #1 in NCAA DII. In 2009, the Lakers were ranked #1 for several weeks, and in 2007 and 2008, GVSU was ranked as high as #3 in the country. Since 2003, GVSU has won ten GLIAC conference championships. The Lakers have been in nine regional championship games winning six of them advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series with national finishes of third in 2013, seventh in 2011 & 2009, fourth in 2005, second in 2004, and fifth in 2003.

Cancellation Policy: Camp fee minus an administrative fee of $40 will be refunded if cancel 2 weeks prior to camp. No refunds within 14 days of the camp unless for medical reasons in which a physician’s note must accompany request. No refunds 72 hours or less prior to camp.
