Event Description

Cross Country

ATC is pleased to offer a fall cross country club, which is designed to introduce cross country fundamentals, conditioning, and opportunities to participate in several USATF cross country races. Our mission is to provide a positive environment for our athletes to gain track and field/cross country experience, build self-confidence, make new friends, and develop a lifelong enjoyment of running.

Athletes do not need to be a resident of Ankeny or attend Ankeny Community School District to participate.

September to November
Eligibility: ages 9-16
Cost:  $60
Limit: 60 athletes

Practice Dates/Locations: Click here for a complete list of practice dates, times, and locations. Frequently Asked Questions can be found here.

What To Bring: Athletes should bring water, running shoes, and a GPS watch (optional). Athletes should also wear layers, as weather will vary during the season. It is important to start practice promptly; please have your child to practice 10 minutes early to use the restroom, change shoes, or ask the coach a question.

What to Expect: Each practice will begin with a warm-up run and dynamic stretching. Workouts will consist of skills, drills, and games to improve endurance. Practice ends with cool-down stretches and conditioning.

Inclement Weather Policy: ATC will attempt to post weather cancellations via our Facebook page, Twitter, text, and email one hour before practice when possible. Practice will be stopped if there is heavy rain and/or lightning in the immediate area.

Meet Distance: The distance run at the meet depends on the athlete’s year of birth (see USATF age divisions):

  • 9-10, 11-12: 3000 meters (3k)
  • 13-14: 4000 meters (4k)
  • 15-16, 17-18: 5000 meters (5k)

What To Expect: Athlete and spectator fees are typically $5. Most meets follow a rolling schedule, meaning that each event will start immediately after the previous event was completed. Parents and athletes are responsible for listening for the XC event check-in time and location.

Optional: A USATF membership is required to participate in the USATF Association Championship if the athlete wants to try to qualify for the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Madison, WI on December 14, 2019.

Check Track Events, Field Events, Cross Country – Include our Club Membership Number: 40-2030.

Note: If membership is purchased after November 1, it will be good through December 2020.
