Winter Prospect Camp
2020 WINTER PROSPECT CAMP
This prospect camp is for the baseball player with serious aspirations to play at the collegiate level.
Camp will take place at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. Haymes was the first event site of the College World Series in 1947. Indoor facilities will be utilized in the case of inclement weather.
Home of WMU's main campus, is located midway between Chicago and Detroit, appx. 2 hours for each on I-94. Hyames is located off of Stadium Dr. just past Waldo Football Stadium. GPS intersection of Stadium Dr. and W. Michigan Ave. in Kalamazoo.
WHAT TO BRING/WEAR
Practice clothes, helmet, baseball glove, baseball bat, molded cleats or turfs, and water bottle. It is reommended for catchers to bring full set of catcher's gear.
Each camper will be evaluated accordingly at the positions they so desire through game action and individual instruction from our coaching staff as well as current WMU players.
A member of the Western Michigan University athletic training staff will be present during session. Medical waiver forms must be completed prior to participation.
BILLY GERNON - HEAD COACH
Coach Gernon enters his tenth season as head coach of the Broncos. Gernon has led the team to the Mid-American Conference Tournament six of his nine years and has a postseason record of 9-10 including the programs first ever Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship in 2016.
In 2019 the Broncos missed the MAC Tournament by only one game decided the last day of the season. Sophomore Blake Dunn was named 1st team ALL MAC and finished with 30 stolen bases, just one shy of the school record. Freshmen pitcher BRady Miller and junior Shortstop Drew Devine were both name second team ALL MAC. The Broncos had signature wins on the road at Notre Dame and North Florida.
Western Michigan Baseball posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 17th consecutive semester under Gernon.
The 2018 season was capped off with Juniors Nic Laio (20th/Rangers RHP) and Connor Smith (30th/Indians SS) being selected in the MLB draft. Smith was the 3rd shortstop to be drafted in the last five years.
In 2017, junior outfielder Tanner Allison became the first MAC Player of the Year since 1991 and was drafted in the 19th round by the Atlanta Braves. He was also honored with All American distinction making it the first time WMU had back to back All Americans since 1994-1995 with Keegan Akin earning the same honor in 2016.
In 2016 the Broncos won the MAC Tournament for the first time in school history earning a berth to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1989. Junior LHP Keegan Akin was a second round pick and the 54th selection overall to the Baltimore Orioles, making him the highest drafted player since 1970.
The Broncos have had nine players drafted in the last nine seasons under Gernon including two of those in the top six rounds.
