2023 PROSPECT CAMP

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15TH

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • All Medical Waivers, concussion and health forms will be completed and signed electronically.

FACILITIES / LOCATION
Camps will take place at beautiful and historical Hyames Field located next to Waldo Football Stadium on the campus of Western Michigan University. Camp would be held in Seelye Center in the event of inclement weather.

Robert J. Bobb Stadium/Hyames Field: Kalamazoo, the home of WMU’s main campus, is located midway between Chicago and Detroit, approximately 2 hours (140 miles) from each, on Interstate 94. Hyames Field is located off of Stadium Drive next to Waldo Football Stadium. GPS intersection of Stadium Dr and Oliver St.

Members of the Bronco Baseball Team will be on staff to assist with the camp.

An athletic trainer will be present

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
Bat, helmet, turf /tennis shoes, molded or metal cleats, baseball pants.

MEDICAL CARE
A member of the Western Michigan University athletic training staff will be present during session. All Medical Waivers, concussion and health forms will be completed and signed electronically. All participants must complete a WMU camp medical insurance form and the Michigan parent and athlete concussion information and release form prior to par-ticipation.

CANCELLATION/REFUND
$20 administrative cancellation fee. If a player is forced to pull out of camp for medical reasons a full refund (minus a 6% processing fee if notification).

WMU COACHING STAFF
BILLY GERNON - HEAD COACH
Billy Gernon enters season 14 as head coach of the Broncos. Gernon has finished in the top four in the MAC two of the last three seasons. The Broncos finished a half game out of second place in 2023 making their way to the reduced four team post season tournament. Gernon led his club to an 18-9 conference record that included sweeps of Toledo, Bowling Green State and Ohio.

In 2022 Dylan Nevar was named MAC Freshmen of the Year as well as being named Freshmen All American. Senior catcher Connor Charping, who was the preseason MAC POTY, earned 1st team All MAC honors. Charping decided to delay medical school to sign with the Seattle Mariners. RHP Easton Sikorski was drafted in the 17th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Cade Sullivan was named 2nd team All MAC and All MAC Defensive Team. The Broncos broke the single season record with 131 doubles.

In 2021 the Broncos finished in third place in the MAC going 23-17. The MAC tournament was eliminated due to cutbacks related to Covid. Junior outfielder Blake Dunn was selected in the 15th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Senior SS Drew Devine and junior catcher Connor Charping were named 1st team ALL MAC, Charping broke the single season record for stolen bases going 32-37.

Western Michigan Baseball has posted a 3.5 accumulative gpa for eight consecutive semesters.

The 2020 season ended at 9-5 due to Covid.

In 2016 the Broncos won the MAC Tournament for the first time in school history earning a berth to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1989. Junior LHP Keegan Akin was first team All MAC as well as MAC Tournament MVP. He too was honored with All American distinction. Akin, who was a second round pick and 54th overall, currently pitches for the Orioles in the big leagues.

The Broncos have had 12 players drafted in the last 12 seasons under Gernon. Two of those Broncos were drafted in the top six rounds.

CORY MEE - ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH
Cory Mee enters season two with the baseball staff at Western Michigan. Cory brings 27 years of Division I college coaching experience. He has had stops at Notre Dame, Michigan State, Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Akron. Mee spent 16 years of his career as the head coach atToledo and his tenure was highlighted by the 2012 MAC West Division Championship, ten appearances in the MAC tournament, and a school-record 195 MAC wins.

Mee was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2010 after leading UT to a record of 34-22, the program's first 30-win season since 1999.

DANIEL SCHLERETH - PITCHING COACH
Daniel Schlereth also enters season two with the baseball staff. Daniel’s pitching staff recorded the most strikeouts since 2016 and saw ace RHP Brady Miller selected All MAC.

Schlereth managed the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League before joining the Broncos. He was an advanced scout with the Pittsburgh Pirates after his 13 year professional playing career ended. Coach Schlereth was a first round draft pick out of Arizona in 2008 and pitched at the big league level for four season. One season with the Diamondbacks and three seasons with the Detroit Tigers . During his time in Detroit the Tigers won back to back AL Central Division titles in 2011 and 22012. Schlereth helped the Tigers reach the 2011 ALCS and the 2012 World Series.
