McNeese Summer High School Band Academies

Sunday, June 16th - Thursday, June 20th, 2019

Students will need the following for their respective academy focus track (please read the entire document!):

Everyone: Attire for the finale performances will be academy shirt (distributed during the week) & shorts or pants

Instrumental Music Academy

  • Your instrument (McNeese CANNOT provide any instruments, mouthpieces or reeds)
  • Standard mute(s)
  • Pencil
  • Swimsuit for Pool Night
  • Umbrella or rain jacket
  • PERCUSSIONISTS: Please bring as much of the following as you have, or can get from your director:
    Concert snare sticks and marching sticks
    Medium yarn mallets / Xylophone mallets / Timpani mallets
    **If you do not have access to all of these, that's ok. Bring as much as you can.

Drum Major Academy

  • Your concert band instrument (if you are a woodwind or brass player)(Percussionists refer to the above list)
  • A metronome if you have one
  • Comfortable athletic shoes
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Swimsuit for Pool Night
  • Umbrella or rain jacket

Color Guard Academy (MSU will not be able to provide any equipment) - More information about equipment, show theme, etc. will be sent to you in early June. Plan to bring a flag. Rifle is optional

All Resident (Overnight) Students
* Note: Residents must remain on campus at all times, unless arrangments are made prior to the academy week. Car keys will be collected from students driving themselves. Any resident leaving campus during the week will be dismissed from the academy without a refund.

  • Bed Linens

  • Towel and Toiletries
  • Alarm clock of some kind

**Residents: If you will be taking any medication during the week, please bring only the amount you will need for the week, in the perscription container. Place the perscription bottle in a ziplock bag, labeled with your name. An academy staff member will hold and distribute medication on a daily basis.**

  • 5:00 Welcome Meeting (Parents may also attend) Band Hall
  • 5:30 Dinner
  • 6:15 Color Guard – Session 1
    Drum Major & Music - Warm up & Seating auditions
  • 7:30 Drum Major & Music – Concert Band Rehearsal
  • 9:00 All – Academy Dismissal - Various Locations

Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday

  • 8:30 Guard – Session 1
    Drum Major - Session 1
    Music – Session 1 (Master Classes)
  • 9:45 Music – Session 2 (Jazz Band & Chamber Groups)
  • 11:00 Drum Majors – Session 2
    Music – Session 3 (Elective Class 1)
  • Noon Break for Lunch
  • 1:15 Guard – Session 2
    Drum Major – Session 3
    Music – Session 4 (Elective Class 2)
  • 2:30 Special Topics Session- Full Academy
  • 3:45 Guard – Session 3
    Drum Major & Music – Concert Band Rehearsal
  • 5:15 Commuter Dismissal
    *All commuters are encouraged to stay or return for the evening activity. If staying, commuters can pay at the cafeteria for dinner ($7.00+tax)

Thursday, June 20

  • 8:30 Guard – Session 1
    Drum Major - Session 1
    Music – Session 1 (Master Classes)
  • 9:45 Music – Session 2 (Jazz Band & Chamber Groups)
  • 11:00 Concert band rehearsal
  • Noon Break for lunch
  • 1:15 Afternoon prep for finale performances
  • 4:00 Dinner for resident and commuter students/dorm cleanup for resident students
  • 5:30 Pre-finale performances in Grand Gallery (large glass entryway of fine arts building)
  • 6:00 Finale Performance in Tritico Theatre (large glass entryway of fine arts building)
  • 6:45 Check out at dorms

Family, directors and friends are invited to the Academy Finale Performances beginning at 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, June 20. This will be held in the grand gallery and Tritico Theatre, next to the band hall.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Dorms, meals and sessions will be supervised at all times.

  • Standard Commuter: $235
    • 2019 Texas All-Area Musician / commuter: $135
    • 2019 Texas All-State Musician (San Antonio in February) / commuter: Free
    • 2018 Louisiana All-State Musician (Baton Rouge in November) / commuter: Free
    • Class of 2019 graduated senior, who will be attending McNeese as a music major / commuter: $100
    • Class of 2019 graduated color guard senior who will be attending McNeese as any major/ commuter: $100

Residents (Over-night)

  • Standard Resident: $350
    • 2019 Texas All-Area Musician: $250
    • 2019 Texas All-State Musician (San Antonio in February): $100
    • 2018 Louisiana All-State Musician (Baton Rouge in November): $100
    • Class of 2019 graduated senior, who will be attending McNeese as a music major / resident: $235
